As we all know, the physical functions of elderly individuals are gradually declining, and we understand the reasons why the elderly are prone to eczema. Next, the editor will briefly introduce some expert opinions on this issue, hoping to help you understand eczema.

First, let's talk about how eczema is diagnosed from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine: In TCM, eczema is referred to as "damp sores." It is believed that in the elderly, eczema is initially caused by intolerance due to innate endowment, and damp-heat arises from the skin. This may also be due to an unhealthy spleen or inadequate nutrition, leading to damp-heat retention, resulting in blood deficiency, dryness due to wind, damp-heat accumulation, and skin malnutrition. As the condition progresses, damp-heat lingers, causing stagnation, or wind-heat injures yin and transforms into dryness, leading to blood stasis in the meridians, insufficient nourishment of the skin by blood, and deficiency of both qi and yin or blood deficiency causing dryness.

Although eczema can occur in individuals of all ages and genders, the various bodily functions of the elderly are declining, and their ability to adapt to the environment, defend against external pathogens, and resist harmful substances is weaker than that of younger people. Additionally, the increased sensitivity of elderly skin makes it unable to tolerate many common stimuli in daily life. For example, environmental changes such as dryness, humidity, high temperatures, and cold, can stimulate skin lesions. Spicy foods, fish, shrimp, lamb, and other animal proteins can easily cause skin allergies in the elderly. Pollen, dust mites, chemical odors, cosmetics, detergents, fur, and synthetic fabrics in the air can also trigger eczema. Therefore, the elderly are more susceptible to dermatitis and eczema.

Finally, the editor would like to remind most elderly individuals to cultivate good lifestyle habits, maintain a healthy diet, engage in daily exercise, and boost their immune system in their daily lives. However, for elderly individuals with severe eczema issues, timely treatment is necessary.

We hope that through the above introduction, everyone has gained a deeper understanding of why the elderly are more prone to eczema. It's important to pay attention to the health issues of elderly individuals, take early preventive measures, and provide timely treatment, allowing them to enjoy a healthy and comfortable life.
